There are currently 99 special protected areas across Mongolia covering 27199400 hectares, equating to 17.4 % of its territory. One of these is Hustai National Park. It was recognized as a special protected area in the 'Nature Reserve' category in 1993, relating to the reintroduction of Przewalski's wild horse, covering 50 thousand hectares of Hustai and then upgraded in 1998 to 'National Park'. Hustai National Park is an area of scientific interest in terms of vegetation and geographic features. As a consequence of research done over the years, 223 species of birds of 119 genera, 43 families, and 17 orders have been registered in Hustai National Park. This represents over half of the bird species found in Mongolia and 210 of the species found in Hustai are represented in this book. 7 species are registered on Appendix of CITES, 31 species on Appendix II of CITES, and 11 species are listed on the Mongolian Red List, making Hustai National Park a vital area for bird species.
